Prerequisites

The following prerequisites are required for all Hazmat Certifications:
- Age and Education
- Candidate must be 18 years of age and hold a High School Diploma, or equivalent (i.e., GED)
- TIMS Traffic Incident Management (FIP 7000) - This is a required in-person course.

Course Description

Performance Standard
NFPA 470, 2022 Standard for Hazardous Materials/ Weapon of Mass Destruction Emergency Response Personnel Professional Qualifications.
After successful completion of this course candidates will receive the Hazardous Materials Technician Fire and Rescue Commission IFSAC Certification.
NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials Technician is also eligible for recipients to gain ProBoard accreditation. To gain ProBoard accreditation, applicant must complete the ProBoard application under 'Certifications' on their OSFM 24 profile.

Historical Note
Discontinue the use of the HM Technician Certification Criteria effective March 12, 2013.
There are two recommended options for certification:
After March 12, 2013 - Certification will be granted by successfully completing the NC DOI Haz Mat Technician course. Course requirements are: HM Ops certified and an approved chemistry course. This requirement will be verified on the first day of NCDOI Haz Mat Technician course.
Prior to March 12, 2013 - Those who have completed the NCDOI Haz Mat Technician course can submit to OSFM, their NCDOI Haz Mat Technician course certificate and proof of completion of an approved chemistry course. Haz Mat Technician courses completed more than five years from the date of the submission will not be accepted. This option will be discontinued December 31, 2014.
