Pyrotechnic Event Employee

Pyrotechnic Event Employee

Pursuant to N.C. General Statute § 58-82A-25 Event Employees are allowed to handle pyrotechnics as long as they are under the direct supervision of the licensed operator in charge of the site, and they hold the proper ATF clearance.

OSFM has developed an on-line certification process for event employees that may be acceptable to the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) where your event is to be held. All local requirements supersede the on-line process offered by OSFM, therefore the AHJ may elect to participate or not participate in the OSFM on-line process.

Pyrotechnic Event Employee On-line Course Registration and Certification

THE AHJ MUST BE NOTIFIED THAT THE PYROTECHNIC OPERATOR INTENDS TO USE EVENT EMPLOYEES AT THEIR EVENT SITE. THE EVENT EMPLOYEE MAY BE DENIED ACCESS TO THE SITE IF THE PYROTECHNIC OPERATOR FAILS TO NOTIFY THE AHJ PRIOR TO THE EVENT.

If the AHJ accepts OSFM online Certification, the event employee candidate should participate in a safety orientation with the pyrotechnic operator prior to taking the certification exam. The questions available at the bottom of this page should be used as a guide for this orientation. The event employee candidate should be able to answer each of these questions prior to beginning the certification exam.

Upon successful completion of the exam the event employee candidate will receive an email with a link to the certificate. The candidate should fill out the Event Employee Certification Application and bring it, the certificate, and verification of identification with them to the pyrotechnic event site. The certification must be obtained no more than seven days prior to the event the individual wants to work. The certificate is void if the event is further than seven days from the date of certification, or the event is not the event specified by the certificate. Certificates are not transferrable from one candidate to another and can only be used for one event. This program requires one certificate per event employee per event.  If the employee is performing multiple events, in the same location utilizing the same materials the AHJ may approve the Event Employee for more than one event on one certificate.  However any change to the show content, location, performance date, or crew members, will make that certificate void.  The AHJ may also require one certificate for each event regardless of location, content, or performance dates.
