FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: State Fire Marshal Urges North Carolinians to Celebrate Safely During America's 250th Anniversary

As North Carolina and the nation prepare to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor is encouraging residents to enjoy the holiday safely by attending professional fireworks displays rather than setting off fireworks at home.

This year, the Office of State Fire Marshal is especially concerned about the increased risk of fires due to ongoing dry conditions and drought concerns across portions of North Carolina. Even a single spark from a firework can ignite dry grass, brush, or nearby structures, leading to potentially devastating fires. In addition to fire risks, fireworks continue to cause thousands of injuries nationwide each year. Burns to the hands, face, and eyes are among the most common injuries treated in emergency rooms during the Independence Day holiday.

"While fireworks can be exciting, the dangers simply are not worth the risk," Taylor said. "Between the dry conditions we are experiencing and the potential for serious injuries, we strongly encourage families to leave fireworks to trained professionals and attend one of the many outstanding community displays taking place across North Carolina."

The Office of State Fire Marshal encourages residents to:

• Attend professional fireworks displays in their community.
• Follow local burn bans and fire safety advisories.
• Keep children away from all fireworks, including sparklers.
• Have a plan to report fires immediately by calling 911.
• Celebrate responsibly and be mindful of neighbors, pets, and first responders.
