MEDIA ADVISORY: Enjoy The Big Game — Just Don’t Fumble

Raleigh, NC
Feb 4, 2026

Super Bowl Sunday is all about good food, good friends, and great football. The NC Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) wants to make sure the only thing getting “burned” this weekend is your team’s chances — not your house or your guests.

Whether you’re hosting a watch party or heading to one, a few easy safety moves can help everyone enjoy the game without any emergencies.

Lock Down That TV

  • Put your TV on a sturdy stand — not a wobbly table or dresser.

  • If it’s a big flat-screen, anchor it to the wall.

  • Tuck cords out of the way so nobody trips during a touchdown celebration.

Keep an Eye on the Kitchen

  • If you’re cooking, stay nearby — don’t leave food unattended.

  • Keep paper towels, boxes, and napkins away from the stove.

  • Use a thermometer to make sure meats are fully cooked.

  • If you step away during halftime… turn the burner off first.

Party Smart

  • Keep kids and pets away from hot food and heavy TVs.

  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working.

  • If alcohol is involved, plan your ride home ahead of time.

From State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor

“Super Bowl Sunday is supposed to be fun — not stressful,” said State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor. “Taking a couple of minutes to secure your TV and keep an eye on the kitchen can make a huge difference. We want folks to enjoy the game, the food, and the company — and still end the night safely at home.”
