Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey to host hot cars demonstration, visit children’s fire camp during trip to McDowell County

-

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will host a hot cars demonstration, visit children participating in the Inferno Fire Camp and present ceremonial grant checks to five volunteer fire departments in need during a trip to McDowell County on Thursday, Aug. 5.

In conjunction with the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office and McDowell County Parks and Recreation, Commissioner Causey, who also serves as Safe Kids NC Chair, will host a hot cars demonstration at the McDowell County Parks and Recreation Center to show the dangers of leaving a child in a hot car.

During the demonstration, Commissioner Causey will show how hot the inside of a car can become as he melts marshmallows and chocolate to make s’mores.  At the same time, a large digital thermometer will simultaneously display the temperatures inside and outside the parked car to show how quickly temperatures can reach life-threatening levels.

McDowell County Parks and Recreation is offering a free swim day to all those who attend the hot cars demonstration.

During Thursday’s visit, Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, will stop by the Inferno Fire Camp at the McDowell County Fire Training Grounds. Commissioner Causey will visit the children and watch them participate in a firefighter challenge on Water Fun Day as they show off the skills they learned throughout the week at camp.

Finally, Commissioner Causey will present checks to five volunteer fire departments in McDowell County. The matching grants are part of a statewide program that awards nearly $9.9 million to 554 volunteer fire departments.
