The NC Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) is taking a leading role in assisting the Jamaica Fire Service as the island recovers from the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm that made landfall last week.
State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor has been in direct communication with Jamaica Fire Commissioner Stewart Beckford to assess needs and coordinate relief efforts aimed at restoring essential emergency response capabilities in affected communities.
“The devastation in Jamaica is substantial, and their fire service is working tirelessly to protect and serve their citizens under extremely difficult conditions,” said Taylor. “Just as others came to North Carolina’s aid after Hurricane Helene, it’s now our turn to pay it forward.”
Drawing on the successes and partnerships formed during the response to Hurricane Helene, OSFM is collaborating with Samaritan’s Purse, Operation Helo, US Fire Pumps, and private aircraft owners to deliver critical supplies and equipment. These partnerships help ensure that vital resources reach the area’s most in need as quickly as possible.
The most urgent needs include:
Generators (4K Watt) | Chainsaws | Protective clothing and gear | Medical supplies
Fire Departments across North Carolina are encouraged to contribute surplus or serviceable equipment remaining from Hurricane Helene response efforts. These donations, including any monetary donations will directly support the Jamaica Fire Service’s efforts to restore operations and rebuild local emergency response capacity.
A shipment will be sent to Miami by Monday, with sea transport to Jamaica scheduled for the following week. Departments willing to donate are asked to contact OSFMinfo@ncdoi.gov as soon as possible to receive delivery instructions. Donations will be collected at the Statesville Airport.
“Reestablishing local fire departments is one of the first and most critical steps in rebuilding communities after disasters like this,” Taylor said. “Every generator, every set of turnout gear, every contribution helps.”
