The NC Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM), in partnership with local fire departments, community organizations, and Kidde, a leading manufacturer of smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, fire extinguishers and safety accessories, officially launched the 2026 Smoke Alarm Saturday campaign on Friday in Winston-Salem, kicking off a statewide effort to improve home fire safety and help protect North Carolina residents.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The NC Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) has approved more than $12 million in grant funding to support volunteer fire departments across North Carolina through the Volunteer Fire Department Fund program for Fiscal Year 2026.

The holiday season is here, a time to enjoy spending time with family and friends and decking the halls with beautiful Christmas decorations. 

To make sure your family has fun and stays safe this Christmas, Chief State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor and Office of State Fire Marshal staff along with Southern Pines Fire and Rescue, will host a live Christmas tree fire demonstration on Friday, Dec. 8. The goal is to reinforce home fire safety efforts during the holiday season by showing just how quickly a dry Christmas tree can burn and spread flames throughout a room.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will honor fire personnel with a pair of visits to Orange and Chatham counties on Friday, November 17 and Saturday, November 18.

Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, will present an Order of the Guardian Award to fire service personnel in recognition of years of service at 7 p.m. on Friday in Hillsborough. The award will be presented during the Orange County Emergency Services Banquet.

The Order of the Guardian Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Department of Insurance.

As the end of daylight-saving time approaches on Sunday, Nov. 5, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is reminding North Carolinians: As we set our clocks back one hour, remember to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.
