As the number of fire deaths rises in North Carolina, Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Causey has organized a team of firefighters and volunteers to be out in force this weekend to distribute and install free smoke alarms in neighborhoods across the state.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will present two Save Awards and an Order of the Guardian Award during a visit to Vance County on Thursday, Jan. 19.



Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, will present SAVE Awards during a stop at Vance County Emergency Services Thursday morning. SAVE Awards go to first responders and others who go above and beyond the call of duty in their work.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will present two Order of the Guardian awards during a visit to Durham County on Saturday, Jan 6.



The Commissioner, who serves as the State Fire Marshal, presents this award to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service in the fire industry.



Commissioner Causey will visit Bahama to present the special awards to two firefighters, both have more than 35 years of service with the fire department.

As the calendar turns to 2023, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is urging residents to be extra cautious during end of year celebrations to decrease the risk of home fires. Recent colder temperatures across North Carolina, combined with extra risks from space heaters, holiday cooking and celebratory fireworks can increase the potential for home fires this time of year exponentially.



The number of fatalities from fires in North Carolina in has reached 147 to date. There were 134 fire deaths in 2021.

This is Winter Weather Preparedness Week (Dec. 4-10) in North Carolina, and Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey wants to make sure families prepare now for potentially dangerous weather this winter.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, is teaming with the Raleigh Fire Department to demonstrate the dangers associated with frying turkeys this holiday season.



Commissioner Causey, along with Office of State Fire Marshal staff and Raleigh firefighters, will host a live fire demonstration to show the dangers of frying a turkey that has not fully thawed.

As the end of daylight saving time approaches on Sunday, Nov. 6, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey reminds North Carolinians: As we set our clocks back one hour, remember to change the battery in your smoke alarm.



“Smoke alarms are a key part of your home fire escape plan. In fact, working smoke alarms cut the chances of dying in a home fire in half,” said Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal. “When you turn back your clocks this weekend, take the time to protect your family by making sure all smoke alarms in your home are working properly.”

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will present a special commissioner’s award for heroism to Zsakiyah Sutton at Rochelle Middle School in Kinston as part of a multi-county visit on Wednesday, Oct 26.



Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, will present the special award to 11-year old Zsakiyah Sutton during an afternoon visit at the school.

Insurance Commissioner & State Fire Marshal Mike Causey is teaming with the Greensboro Fire Department to kick-off Fire Prevention Week on Tuesday, October 11 at 10 a.m. at the Greensboro Science Center.



This kick-off event will feature fire prevention shows, an appearance from Sparky the Fire Dog, as well as games, activities, and giveaways for families!



Fire Prevention Week runs from Oct. 9-15, 2022. This year’s theme is “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.”
