For Immediate Release: Safe Kids North Carolina Reminds Families to Put Safety First This Black Friday and Holiday Shopping Season

Raleigh, NC
Nov 26, 2025

As shoppers kick off Black Friday and the holiday season, Safe Kids North Carolina, led by the Office of State Fire Marshal, reminds parents and caregivers to prioritize safety.

“We all get caught up in the excitement of the holidays,” said Brian Taylor, NC State Fire Marshal. “But taking a few extra minutes to think about safety—while shopping and choosing gifts—can help prevent accidents and injuries.”

Tips for a safe shopping season:

  • Keep young children within arm’s reach in crowded stores or parking lots.

  • Never leave children alone in a car, even briefly.

  • Teach older kids what to do if separated.

  • Hold hands or use strollers for toddlers.

  • Watch for distracted drivers, especially in dark or rainy conditions.

  • Toy and gift safety:

  • Buy age-appropriate gifts and check labels.

  • Avoid small parts, magnets, or button batteries for children under 3.

  • Look for “UL” or “ASTM” safety certification labels.

  • Include helmets and protective gear for bikes, scooters, or skateboards.

  • Inspect toys for hazards and avoid recalled or counterfeit products.

Safe Kids NC also reminds families to keep small parts, batteries, and packaging away from young children, and to check the latest toy recalls at www.recalls.gov.

“Black Friday and the holidays are a wonderful time to make memories,” Taylor added. “Let’s make sure those memories are safe by shopping smart.”
