Greensboro, NC — On National Heat Stroke Awareness Day, we’re coming together to shine a light on a preventable tragedy impacting families across North Carolina. The NC Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM), in partnership with Safe Kids North Carolina, Safe Kids Worldwide, and the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program, will host a Hot Cars Awareness Display & Media Event to raise awareness about the dangers of leaving children in vehicles.

Friday, May 1, 2026 | 11:00 a.m.

Greensboro Science Center, 4301 Lawndale Drive

This impactful display will feature 50 pairs of children’s shoes—each representing a child in North Carolina whose life was tragically lost due to a hot car incident.

Speakers include:
• Allan Buchanan, Safe Kids NC (Emcee)
• Brian Taylor, NC State Fire Marshal
• Mark Ezzell, GHSP Director
• Torine Creppy, Safe Kids Worldwide
• Representative, Safe Kids Guilford County

 What you’ll see:
• A moving memorial display
• Community members and families
• Opportunities for interviews

These tragedies are 100% preventable, yet they can happen to anyone. Even the most attentive caregivers can experience a change in routine. One simple habit can save a life:
Look Before You Lock.  Together, North Carolina is working toward zero deaths—because one life lost is one too many.
