The code specifies that a floor or landing be provided at the bottom of an interior stairway
but is silent on the presence of a doorway. Just as the code is silent on the subject of a doorway
in a corridor, it follows that as long as the floor beyond the doorway is continuous, on the same
level, to meet the intent of a landing, it is compliant with Section R311.7.6.. The cased opening
or doorway would only need to meet the minimum egress width and height requirements.
Safe operation of the door latch will require an 18” minimum floor space between the nose of the
bottom tread and the face of the door. The 18” space is intended to allow sufficient floor area for
safe footing while manipulating the latching device. If no door is present, then the cased opening
can be less than 18” from the nose of the bottom tread to the face of the cased opening with stair
headroom maintained.
0311.7.6 - Doors on Landings at Bottom of Interior Stairs https://www.ncosfm.gov/0311.7.6%20-%20Doors%20on%20Landings%20at%20Bottom%20of%20Interior%20Stairs 0304.4.2.3 - Metal Valet Trash and Recyclable Materials Cans https://www.ncosfm.gov/fire-prevention/0304423-metal-valet-trash-and-recyclable-materials-cans 0304.4.2.3 - Metal Valet Trash and Recyclable Materials Cans https://www.ncosfm.gov/0304.4.2.3%20-%20Metal%20Valet%20Trash%20and%20Recyclable%20Materials%20Cans 201216 Gough - Oversizing Heat Pump Cooling Based on Manual S Cold Climate https://www.ncosfm.gov/formal-interpretations/201216-gough-oversizing-heat-pump-cooling-based-manual-s-cold-climate 201216 Gough - Oversizing Heat Pump Cooling Based on Manual S Cold Climate https://www.ncosfm.gov/201216%20Gough%20-%20Oversizing%20Heat%20Pump%20Cooling%20Based%20on%20Manual%20S%20Cold%20Climate 210.52(A) & 210.12(A) - Sunroom Requirements https://www.ncosfm.gov/electrical/21052a-21012a-sunroom-requirements 210.52(A) & 210.12(A) - Sunroom Requirements https://www.ncosfm.gov/210.52%28A%29%20%26amp%3B%20210.12%28A%29%20-%20Sunroom%20Requirements Window and Door Installation Requirement for Framing and Insulation Inspection Temporarily During COVID-19 https://www.ncosfm.gov/guidance-papers/window-and-door-installation-requirement-framing-and-insulation-inspection Window and Door Installation Requirement for Framing and Insulation Inspection Temporarily During COVID-19 https://www.ncosfm.gov/Window%20and%20Door%20Installation%20Requirement%20for%20Framing%20and%20Insulation%20Inspection%20Temporarily%20During%20COVID-19 201028 Rettie - NCBC Section 716.5 Fire Door and Fire Shutter Testing https://www.ncosfm.gov/formal-interpretations/201028-rettie-ncbc-section-7165-fire-door-and-fire-shutter-testing 201028 Rettie - NCBC Section 716.5 Fire Door and Fire Shutter Testing https://www.ncosfm.gov/201028%20Rettie%20-%20NCBC%20Section%20716.5%20Fire%20Door%20and%20Fire%20Shutter%20Testing 0716.5.3 - Smoke and Draft Control Doors for Rated Exit Access Corridors https://www.ncosfm.gov/building/071653-smoke-and-draft-control-doors-rated-exit-access-corridors 0716.5.3 - Smoke and Draft Control Doors for Rated Exit Access Corridors https://www.ncosfm.gov/0716.5.3%20-%20Smoke%20and%20Draft%20Control%20Doors%20for%20Rated%20Exit%20Access%20Corridors
